Switzerland’s culture capital and city of architecture
Basel is the perfect place to embark on a fascinating journey into the world of art. Around 40 museums, the world’s largest art fair and a lively, young art scene make Basel a must-see for the culturally interested traveller. The Fondation Beyeler is one of the most beautiful museums in the world and is renowned internationally for its prestigious exhibitions. Museum Tinguely houses the largest collection of works by the Swiss artist Jean Tinguely, while the Kunstmuseum Basel, one of the best-known museums of its kind in the world, is home to the world’s oldest public art collection.

Basel’s architectural diversity is unique in Switzerland. Local architects such as Herzog & de Meuron and Diener & Diener attract attention from around the world with their buildings, playing a huge part in the development of their home city. The cityscape also features works by architects from abroad, among them Richard Meier, Frank O. Gehry and Renzo Piano. 13 winners of the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize have immortalized themselves in Basel with their designs. Some of the most eye-catching examples can be seen on the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein and on the Novartis Campus. This concentration of superior architecture is unique in the world.

The Rhine, Basel’s artery carrying the lifeblood of the city, provides all manners of recreation. When the temperature rises, the sun-drenched bank of the river on the Kleinbasel side becomes almost Mediterranean. People can relax at the charming buvettes – the small, lovingly designed open-air eateries – or let themselves be carried along by the river’s gentle current. On a hot summer’s day, there are few things better than cooling off with a swim in the Rhine while admiring the historical backdrop of the city as you float past. To keep clothes and valuables dry while you’re in the water, Basel has invented the Wickelfisch – a brightly coloured, waterproof swim bag.
