Where the Mediterranean meets the Alps: The ultimate destination for trail running and outdoor sports

In Ascona-Locarno, where unspoiled nature meets an array of outdoor sports, every moment is an invitation to explore, challenge yourself, and unwind in the beauty of the great outdoors. With its pristine nature, variated landscapes and mild climate, this region is the perfect setting for an active but still relaxing holiday.

Boasting over 1,400 km of trails, Ascona-Locarno is a paradise for hikers and trail runners alike. The extensive network includes paths for mountain biking, cycling, rock climbing, and water sports on the lake and rivers. With an impressive 2,300 hours of sunshine annually, there is ample time to explore the breathtaking scenery and hidden gems.

Trail running on Lake Maggiore is particularly special. The trails, framed by crystal-clear mountain lakes, turquoise rivers, thundering waterfalls, verdant meadows, and lush forests, provide an idyllic backdrop for adventure. The area’s rugged terrain offers challenging routes for seasoned runners seeking technical trails, while also catering to those who prefer less demanding paths. For those who thrive on competition, the region hosts numerous international races.
This year, Cardada, the local mountain of Locarno, is even hosting the most important trail running event of the year, the final of the Golden Trail Series by Salomon. The top 60 athletes, 30 female and 30 male, in the world, who have qualified through their strong performances in previous competitions, are invited to the Ascona Locarno Golden Trail Finals.
There will also be a competition for amateurs, which anyone can register for. The final will take place from 17 to 20 October and will be run on a 26 km course.

After an exhilarating day on the trails, find relaxing moments in one of the wellness centres in the area. The region’s numerous beaches, lidos, and riverside bathing spots are perfect for soaking up the sun and cooling off in the water.
