Val Müstair and the Swiss National Park now form a 371-square meter UNESCO Biosphere. UNESCO requires that all conditions be met by 2013. The National Park in the Engadine is Switzerland’s oldest UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The linkage more than doubles the size of the reserve.
Biosphere reserves are sites recognized under UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme which innovate and demonstrate approaches to conservation and sustainable development. There are 529 sites worldwide in 105 countries.
