In the 1969 movie, “Downhill Racer,” Robert Redford portrayed a cocky young American ski racer named Dave Chappelet who clashed with his coach, Eugene Claire, played by Gene Hackman. Many of the scenes were shot in Wengen, Switzerland. Bode Miller played a starring role in Wengen this past weekend, as did a couple of popular veterans.

WENGEN, Switzerland — For ski racers, it’s a place like no other. Breathtaking scenery, a storied past, a trip up involving a cog railway called the Wengernalpbahn, and a grueling test of stamina known as the Lauberhorn, by far the longest downhill on tour at almost 2.8 miles in length. In the shadow of the awe-inspiring Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau peaks, is Wengen, Switzerland.
