The latest 2022 travel figures are in, and all indicators show that American have a strong affinity for Switzerland. The numbers recently released by the Swiss Federal Office of Statistics (published March 9, 2023), show a recovery of nearly 93% in U.S. arrivals to Switzerland, for a total of 1,075,511 visitors. The number of overnight stays was 2.3 million, a decline of only 7% compared to 2019 which was a record year, making 2022 the second-best year of Switzerland Tourism in North America.

This positive trends continue, as the overnight figures combined from the US and Canada to Switzerland in January 2023 are +9.7% higher compared to the same month in 2019, placing North America as the second biggest market after Germany and the largest long-haul market for Switzerland Tourism.*

“We are thrilled to see the confidence guests from the United States have in Switzerland post-pandemic. It is particularly exciting to see vacationers exploring the variety Switzerland has to offer. From the Italian-speaking Ticino, the Valais with its charming alpine resorts and the Canton of Bern, home to Interlaken and the glorious Jungfrau Mountain. All three regions even outperformed the record year of 2019.” says Claudio Zemp Director Americas of Switzerland Tourism.

68% of the overnights coming from the U.S. were generated by boutique towns like Zurich, Geneva and Lucerne and two-thirds of all visitors from the U.S. traveled to Switzerland during the summer months from June to September.
