Toronto, February 27: The latest numbers of Switzerland’s arrival and overnight statistics show that Canadians continue to travel to Switzerland in solid numbers. Despite a strong Swiss Franc, Canadian arrivals and overnights increased in 2012 for the third year in a row. Recently released tourism data from the Swiss Federal Office of Statistics show an increase of 1.9% in Canadian arrivals in Switzerland, for a total of 101,350. The increase in overnights was 1.5% (231,642 overnights), for an average stay of 2.3 days. This generates an income of over $55mio for Switzerland’s tourism industry out of Canada.

The top five destinations for Canada were Zurich, Geneva, Lake Geneva, Lucerne, and the Bernese Oberland. The largest gain of Canadian visitors was recorded in Fribourg. The strong growth of 12.9% to this rural area indicates that the increase is based on leisure travel. The city of Basel continued expending its market share with a strong gain of 17.9% visitors, followed by the cities of Zurich and Geneva, which also have have direct air connection from Canada with Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS), Air Canada, Air Transat, and Edelweiss Air.

“Canada remains a stable and trusted market for Switzerland and is of importance to Switzerland Tourism”, says Mirko Capodanno, Country Manager Canada, “In addition to the great direct air connections to Switzerland from Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver, Canadians enjoy the soft adventure offers in Switzerland. Hiking and biking is becoming more popular among Canadians, especially for travellers from Ontario and Québec, as well as multi-generational travel.”

Cooperation with Canadian Tour Operators like Tours Chanteclerc and the new product line “Swiss Moments / Moment Suisses”, and close partnerships with the Globus Family of Brands, Air Canada Vacations or Transat Tours are aimed to give clients a solid choice of Swiss vacation options.
