Swiss Youth Hostels

Swiss Youth Hostels state that a stay in one of their hostels is 10 times more environmentally friendly than a night at a 5* hotel. Swiss Youth Hostel tries to do everything to minimise their ecological footprint and they have had more than two-third (more than 2.6 Mil.) climate-neutral bookings since 2007. A climate-neutral booking can be achieved through a voluntary climate contribution from guests, which is used on the one hand to offset emissions and on the other for an internal climate fund. Swiss Youth Hostels has, for example, more than halved CO2 emissions from hot water production and heating through modifications at their buildings.

Honey from a city rooftop in Bern

The Hotel Schweizerhof Bern decided to take action to preserve the Swiss bee population. The Hotel, together with the help of a Swiss start-up, installed three beehives on its rooftop. Now, not only does the hotel helps bees living in the city, but it also offers 5* honey to its visitors. Due to the wider variety of flowers and the almost non-existence of pesticides in the city, the honey is said to taste even better.
